Dopamine detox from YouTube: what actually helps

Quick answer

The idea: cut out YouTube, Shorts and scrolling for a while so normal life feels interesting again. People who've tried it say it can help, though the name oversells the science.

About the name

The name oversells the brain science. In practice, people cut back on constant, easy stimulation and fill the time with things that take a bit more effort. That framing makes it easier to keep going after the 'detox' ends.

What people say worked

Deleting or logging out of short-video apps, so there's a delay before you can open them.
Phone out of reach in the morning.
Grayscale mode to make the phone duller.
Fixed no-phone times, like meals and the first hour of the day.
Replacing scrolling with walks, reading, exercise or seeing friends.
Expecting boredom and cravings for the first week.

A realistic 30 day reset

Week 1: No Shorts, no Home feed. Subscriptions only.
Week 2: Add a daily time limit.
Week 3: One evening a week with no screens.
Week 4: Decide what stays. Keep the rules that helped.

After it ends

Most people slide back without a plan. Keep one or two rules for good, like a daily limit and no phone in bed. See set a daily YouTube limit and the YouTube diet.

How 125x fits

If you keep some YouTube, 125x lets you keep only your subscriptions, with a summary on every video and no Shorts, Home feed or autoplay to pull you back in.
